Connecting Weibo

Publish to Weibo (微博) — reach 580M+ Chinese users. Setup guide, content rules, troubleshooting.

Weibo (微博) is China's largest microblogging platform with 580+ million monthly active users. Connecting Weibo to the Social Publisher lets you publish marketing posts in Simplified Chinese (Mandarin) directly from Gamosy.

Why Weibo for game devs

  • Largest Chinese market reach — Chinese gaming market is the world's largest by revenue
  • Discovery via hashtag topics#话题# (double-hash) creates clickable topic pages
  • Native game-dev community — Steam, Epic, indie titles all have organic Chinese fan bases on Weibo

Two ways to connect

Option 1: + Connect (recommended)

One-click OAuth using Gamosy's pre-approved Weibo app. No setup required:

  1. Go to Social Publisher → Connections
  2. Click + Connect on the Weibo card
  3. Sign in with your Weibo account on the Weibo consent screen
  4. Done — your account appears with your Weibo avatar and @username

Option 2: BYOK (Bring Your Own Keys)

Use your own Weibo Open Platform application. Useful if you have an established Weibo developer account or need higher rate limits.

⚠️ Important: Weibo Open Platform registration historically requires a Chinese mobile number. Foreign developers without one should use + Connect instead.

BYOK setup

  1. Visit open.weibo.com/apps and create a Web Application
  2. Submit for Weibo review (typically 24–72h)
  3. Once approved, in your app's settings:
    • Add Safe Domain (安全域名): your website domain (e.g. yourgame.com)
    • Add OAuth Callback URL: https://www.gamosy.com/api/social/callback/weibo
  4. Copy the App Key and App Secret from the app dashboard
  5. In Gamosy: Social Publisher → Connections → Weibo → BYOK → paste the keys

Content rules — read this before posting

The AI generator follows these rules automatically, but it's good to know them when editing:

Language

All Weibo posts are generated in Simplified Chinese (简体中文), regardless of your other platform copies. The Chinese audience expects native-language content.

Hashtags

Weibo uses double-hash format: #话题# (closing hash mandatory). Different from Twitter/X.

✅ Correct: #独立游戏# #游戏推荐# #Steam# ❌ Wrong: #独立游戏 #游戏推荐 (no closing hash — won't be clickable)

Mentions

@用户名 works with both Chinese and ASCII handles. Add a trailing space after the handle so Weibo's tokenizer can detect the boundary.

URLs

  • Weibo automatically shortens URLs to t.cn/xxxxxx (similar to Twitter's t.co)
  • The Steam game URL must be on a domain pre-registered as a Safe Domain in your Weibo app dashboard. Posts with URLs to non-registered domains are silently rejected.

Length

LimitBehavior
≤140 charsFull post visible in timeline (recommended for marketing)
141–2000 charsPost collapsed to teaser with clickable "全文" / "Read more"
>2000 charsHard limit — post rejected

The composer counter shows your current length. Aim for ≤140 for maximum engagement.

Weibo emoji codes

For native-rendered Weibo emoji icons (instead of Unicode emoji), use square-bracket codes:

CodeRenders as
[good]👍 thumbs up
[赞]👍 like
[doge]doge meme face
[害羞]shy emoji
[威武]salute
[心]❤️ heart
[哈哈]😂 laugh
[鲜花]💐 flowers

What NOT to post

Weibo's content moderation is strict. Avoid:

  • Politics (especially CCP critique, Taiwan/HK/Tibet/Xinjiang sovereignty, religion, 1989 references)
  • Competitor brand bashing
  • Blockchain/crypto/NFT language
  • Gambling/lottery references
  • Game names that haven't been approved by China's NPPA (use Chinese-localized names where applicable, e.g., 和平精英 for the China-region PUBG, 原神 for Genshin Impact)

Posting limits

  • Single image OR single video per post (multi-image upload requires upgraded API permissions not available to international apps)
  • Image: max 5 MB, JPG/PNG/GIF
  • Video: native upload not supported in v1 — attach an image instead and put the video URL in the body

Troubleshooting

"Reconnect Weibo to continue posting"

Your access token has expired. Weibo international apps don't support automatic token refresh — click the Reconnect button to re-authorize.

"Content was moderated by Weibo" / "20017"

Your post contains a restricted word. Try rephrasing — see the What NOT to post section above. Most often: politically sensitive terms, competitor brand names, or unlicensed game references.

"Identical post was published recently" / "20019"

Weibo blocks duplicate posts within ~24h. Edit the text (add a hashtag, change wording) and retry.

"Rate limit reached" / "10024"

You've hit Weibo's per-account posting limit (~150/h). Wait an hour and retry. The composer's scheduling feature can space out posts to stay under the limit.

Post appears in your draft but never on the timeline

This is silent moderation — Weibo accepted the post via API but hid it. Check that:

  1. gamosy.com (or your custom Safe Domain) is registered in your Weibo app dashboard
  2. The post text doesn't contain any restricted terms
  3. Your Weibo account isn't temporarily restricted (check on weibo.com directly)
